FAQ

General

  • What is BodyRecog?
BodyRecog is an application that assesses a person’s health risks for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer, based on their body type and body shape. It digitally measures the human body, displays results on the user’s photo; analyzes obtained data, explains health biometrics and offers expert recommendations.
BodyRecog is a two-way platform that connects PRO users (professionals from the areas of biomedicine, sport, fitness, and nutrition) with HOME users (health-conscious individuals). BodyRecog HOME comes as a mobile app, while BodyRecog PRO is a web app.
  • How does BodyRecog measure my body?
BodyRecog PRO measures your body with a Structure Sensor, an in-depth sensing camera that captures a 3D-scan of your body, and our augmented reality algorithm derives measurements from it.
BodyRecog HOME measures your body from photos taken by your smartphone camera and uploaded into our app. Our algorithm based on photogrammetry and backed up with artificial intelligence, offers then measurement results.
Furthermore, this algorithm utilizes machine learning to continuously improve results of the measuring process, i.e. with each new measurement it performs.
  • What should I wear during scanning?
For best results, one should wear swimwear, either a one-piece or a two-piece that has no additional loose or bulging material anywhere. Second best option is underwear, again without any additional loose or bulging material anywhere.
Third best option is skintight athletic wear. Please do keep in mind that we strongly suggest that whatever you wear should be absolutely skintight, as looser or bulging clothing will affect the results of the measurements significantly.
For other factors affecting measurement results, please see: Factors Affecting Measurement Results.
  • Are there any restrictions to using BodyRecog?
    Yes, there are:
    • This version of BodyRecog is meant for average adults only, from 18 – 60 years of age, including professional athletes. We will update it down the line to include the younger ones and the older ones as well; as their health biometrics differs from those of the adult.
    • A special module for pregnant women is in development, and will be released in the future. The present version of the app is not meant for them.
    • We estimate that BodyRecog might show slightly less precise results for the Extremely Obese. To what degree, if at all, it does, will be formally determined by the Faculty of Kinesiology, University of Zagreb, Croatia, in the Fall-Winter of 2016.
    • Due to insufficient published scientific work, our health risk assessments and recommendations for transsexuals i.e. those who have changed their sex both surgically and hormonally, might be incomplete. Our best assumption is to go through the app as if you are born as whatever your new sex is, get the assessments and follow the recommendations.
    • Regarding people with any genetic syndrome (e.g. Down Syndrome, Triple X Syndrome, Marfan Syndrome etc.), our health risk assessments and recommendations might again be incomplete. Our best assumption is to go through the app as is, get the assessments and follow the recommendations, but always consult your doctor first.
  • When will BodyRecog be released?
The release of our beta version is planned some time during the Olympic Games in Rio, August 2016. Both BodyRecog PRO and BodyRecog HOME will be offered free of charge for testing to everyone interested in using it, for at least three months.
After we receive feedback from our testers, we will update BodyRecog and then release it.
  • How do I use BodyRecog HOME properly?
Before you use it, you will need to create an account and input some basic information about yourself.
Afterwards, proceed with calibrating the app for yourself – take 11 pictures of yourself in designated poses (the app will guide you which poses to take) plus 1 background picture.
When you complete the sign in and calibration procedures, the app is all set up and ready for use. From then on, you can take measurements at any time simply by following the in-app instructions.
Further measurements require only 4 photos plus 1 background photo. Don’t worry, you will be guided by the on-screen instructions within the app. For factors affecting measurement results, please see: Factors Affecting Measurement Results.
  • Does BodyRecog create a full scan, or gives just measurement results?
The Structure Sensor captures your whole body shape and recreates it in 3D, while the version with the smartphone camera reproduces pictures with measurement results attached.
  • What is the source of health risk assessment data and recommendations that BodyRecog offers?
All health risk assessments are based on published scientific works, and thus very personalized taking into consideration your age, sex, ethnicity, and body measurements.
Our recommendations are based on professional guidelines, and personalized according to your nutrition status, and partially fitness status.
Please do keep in mind that professional guidelines are subject to change as new discoveries come up.
We strongly suggest to professionals using BodyRecog PRO, to personalize given recommendations even further, based on their knowledge of their client’s health status, nutrition status, fitness status, and personal preferences. Clinical Studies using BodyRecog are also planned and arranged.

Technical

  • What hardware is needed?
The mobile app BodyRecog HOME works with all newer models of smartphones or tablets. BodyRecog PRO, if used with Structure Sensor, requires iPad Air 2 to take scans.
  • What platforms are supported?
BodyRecog HOME requires at least iOS 8 or Android 5.1.
  • How accurate is it?
According to in-house testing, BodyRecog HOME is 85-100% accurate and precise right now, and is constantly improving its accuracy and precision with usage, thanks to artificial intelligence and deep learning.
According to in-house testing, BodyRecog PRO is 90-100% accurate and precise right now, depending on the operator. Once you get hold of 3D-model capturing process, accuracy and precision increase.
Formal scientific validation and verification of both digital measurement methods (photogrammetry with deep learning, and 3D-scanning with Structure Sensor) will be performed by the Faculty of Kinesiology, University of Zagreb, Croatia, in the Fall-Winter of 2016.

Security & Privacy

  • What happens to my data?
When using the smartphone camera, the photos and the rest of the data are stored on our extremely secure cloud servers, so that you can have easy access to them at any time.
When using the Structure Sensor, a 3D-model of your body shape and measurements are generated, and sent to our servers.
We assure you that maximum care has been taken in both cases to protect and doubly encrypt your private information.
  • How is my data secured?
Security and privacy of your data is our number one concern, therefore our security standards are based on best industry practices. Confidentiality of all data is encrypted during transport, and at storage.
Access to the web service is protected with a two-way authentication process.
We also implemented protective measures against robots, brute force attacks and identity theft.
  • Can I share my data with others?
Yes, you have numerous options for sharing your photos and measurement results via social networks or email.
We encourage you to share your results with a selected few, as motivation and feedback received from friends, family or professionals will go a long way in helping you stay motivated and sticking to your program.
  • Is there a privacy filter (that would make me non-identifiable) while taking the pictures?
For maximum protection, a face blurring option will be implemented within the application, so no one can know your identity if you want to hide it for whatever reason.
This option may be turned on and off as you like. Although most people want to store and share photos without blurring their face, a good number would still like to use this option.
Another option that will be implemented in version 2.0 for the extremely shy or privacy-seeking, is storing 2D-silhouettes of your body.
  • Do you collect and share data?
We collect only the information that you give us of your own accord through e-mail, form completions or surveys. All collected information is protected against unauthorized access or release. We do not share, sell, rent or loan any identifiable personal information to third parties.
